After Hurricane Helene came through

Flood of ’77

Growing Up on the Farm

Pretty Calm, Pretty Quiet

I was about seven years old

I’m a retired firefighter

With the cell phones and AI

We went to town

I moved to the USA

To Me, the Art Creates

I was born here

I was Born here 1952

My Mother did not have a name chosen for me

When the hurricane came down

Surreal.

I live down in Hardscrabble Holler

Just the Bible number one

Heritage and nature

Doctor Ost

I can say I never did go to bed hungry

We were a close-knit community

They was a house full of us boys

I had an uncle that lived in that house

We growed everything that we ate

I come see Doc Ost

I feel like coming back home.

This is a picture of my mother

This community

A lot of changes

Well, I grew up on Sang Branch

My little brother was born here

For some reason

Have you ever heard about the Buck House?

I learned about it actually through my daughter

We lost our elementary school

There’s about six or seven of them

My mother gave birth to 14 children

I was born here

Yancey County.

I was born on that mountain

It’s neat.

I can remember coming here

There’s one place I love to go and take pictures

It was my Great-great-grandfather;

so my great-grandmother

So basically, in the 1920s

I lived in a trailer park at the end of the mountain

My grandmother was born in Yancey county

We’ve been excited about it all week

It was like being 16 again

We planted all kinds of things

His sister married my first cousin

I mean, I was born here

We lived way down below that mountain place

We lived on Little Creek

It’s interesting when you get the whole community

It’s just a surreal experience

It was really interesting.

Talking about getting corn

It was Doctor Ost

Yeah, we lived all the way in the head of the holler

We just love getting into the mountains

One thing I remember

I’ve lived in yancey County most of my life.

Ramps grow wild

Grew up on a farm.

Right after the flood

Well, my mom told me, of course

I think it’s the best place in the world

It’s just a great place.

Whether it was small or big, everybody farmed.

Good hospitality,

I was born and raised in Crabtree

I was born here at Higgins

They caught a skunk

I was born here in June of 1967

the worst horror movie you’ve ever seen

the little old ice houses

Feels a little strange

you do more gossiping than you do quilting

That was my grandmother
