Developed in collaboration with SOURCE Studio, Mel Chin’s gathering will bring together individuals connected to his studio, a former maternity hospital that served Yancey County, North Carolina, for an afternoon of storytelling, printmaking, music, and shared food on the 2nd anniversary of Hurricane Helene. Reflecting on the building’s history as a site of community life, participants will be invited to share family stories and create prints in collaboration. Titled It’s not from around here but you are, the gathering will take the form of a community picnic featuring food prepared by immigrant chefs who have made North Carolina their home, using culinary traditions and cooking demonstrations to foster cultural exchange and understanding.
