Why We Gather is a yearlong series of artist-led gatherings taking place across twelve rural communities in the United States between August 2026 and July 2027. Initiated by twelve artists with deep roots and longstanding relationships in the places where they work, the project uses hosting and gifting as artistic frameworks for bringing people together through shared meals, storytelling, collective making, and cultural exchange. Timed to the nation’s 250th anniversary, Why We Gather creates a mosaic portrait of the United States through gatherings shaped by regional foodways, cultural traditions, and community priorities. By supporting artists, commissioning local makers, and investing in community-based cultural programming, the project expands access to meaningful cultural experiences while strengthening local creative economies and fostering dialogue, connection, and civic participation.

CIVIC LIFE AND MUTUAL AID
Why We Gather centers collective responsibility and civic participation as the foundation of shared life. Drawing on traditions of mutual aid, rural infrastructure, labor, migration, and resource management, the gatherings explore how communities organize care, sustain one another, and contribute to civic and community life. Emphasis is placed on shared meals, storytelling, collective making, and cultural exchange as opportunities for dialogue, connection, and civic participation.
CULTURAL MEMORY AND IDENTITY
Why We Gather focuses on how communities sustain, adapt, and transmit identity over time. Through themes of cultural memory, migration, and cultural survival, the gatherings examine the processes through which histories are remembered, reinterpreted, and carried forward, highlighting the ways communities heal, persist, and affirm belonging across generations.
FOOD AND SUBSISTENCE
Why We Gather understands food as both material sustenance and cultural practice. Addressing food sovereignty, regional foodways, ecology, and intergenerational knowledge, it considers how nourishment is produced, shared, and valued. The gatherings highlight the role of shared meals in strengthening cultural traditions, local creative economies, and community relationships, framing subsistence as a site of autonomy, resilience, and collective care.
LAND, STEWARDSHIP, AND SOVEREIGNTY
Why We Gather celebrates communal and individual relationships to land.. Encompassing land rights, Indigenous stewardship, tribal sovereignty, borders, and place-based ecologies—from deserts to coastlines— the gatherings examine how land and water are cared for, contested, and understood. The project foregrounds the political, cultural, and spiritual dimensions of territory, and the ongoing work of asserting and restoring sovereignty.
CLIMATE, ECOLOGY, AND RESILIENCE
Why We Gather addresses how communities respond to environmental change and crisis. Bringing together climate resilience, recovery, ecological futures, cultural fire, and the environmental costs of technology and agriculture, the gatherings recognize the importance of traditional ecological knowledge, local expertise, and contemporary strategies for adaptation. The focus is on resilience as an active, evolving practice grounded in care, innovation, and long-term ecological thinking.
