A lot of changes

Gathering:

Prompt: What is something that is no longer here that you still have a memory of?

Les Robinson  A lot of changes in the sizes of the farms. More of the farms, more of the land now is owned by people who moved here later. Not too many are owned by the original families, and the land has grown up.

At the time I was a kid, we never saw deer in that whole area where I lived. That whole valley of Sang Branch. We never saw a deer moving around there. If you drive through there now, you can see them crossing the road at many intervals and everything.

I think the combination of the way the farmers did things-you know, there were more. There are now more fields that are where deer can thrive than there were back then, when it was mostly wooded, forested, or cleared fields, you know, for farming. But for some reason, the number of wildlife has made a big change, you know. It’s not nearly the same. The way these, I’ve always been fascinated by maps and geography and so on. This road here.

Are you from this area, or are you just a part of the agency?

Shyanne Bellamy  Just part of the program from South Carolina.

Les Robinson  If you go up this road right here, this Hog Branch, and went on up all the way to the end of the Hog Branch and continued, it would drop you down over on Jack’s Creek, on Bailey Branch over there, from the road, the road that I lived on, Sang Branch, which is a couple of further miles, 2 miles further down. If you went up same branch, it took you out into about the same place on Jack’s Creek that it would if you went up this road. So that the the change in transportation. We lived about 14 miles from town, so we didn’t get to town frequently. Now you know, most people probably go about every day or every other day or so.
