Well, I grew up on Sang Branch

Gathering:

Prompt: What was it liking growing up in Yancey County?

Les Robinson Well, I grew up on Sang Branch, which is about two miles south north of here, and it was just a hardworking farming rural community with a little church up on the hill where we attended on Sundays, and it was pretty tough time. I was not born during the Depression, that was well before I was born, but it was a somewhat difficult time earning a living, making a living. I went to Bee Log Elementary School through the eighth grade, and by then they had opened. My older sister had graduated from high school at Bee log, but by the time I came along, they had moved the high school students to the new high school, Cane River, which is now a middle School and the school, the high school was the Bee log school was the center of attention. Someone told me in the community, someone told me recently that at one time there were 400 students attending that old school. That was K through or first through 12. Eventually, it went down to K through 8, and it was the smallest school in the state of North Carolina because so many people moved out of the valleys and moved to town where they had job opportunities and stuff like that.

Shyanne Bellamy  Was there a difference between the schools like in town and like that small school?

Les Robinson  I’m sure there were. I think my sister was one of a class Of 18, and I was one of a class of over 100, you know. So band and some things like that were offered that could not have been offered in those smaller schools.
