I was born here at Higgins by Doctor Ost. He was the first Seventh Day Adventist doctor here. The history is, you know, the Presbyterian started it. Then the Adventists bought it sometime in the 1940s, mid 1940s, after World War II, I guess. And in 1950, September the 9th, I was born here by Dr. Ost. I was number 10 of a dozen children, 10 down, two after me. So they was making a joke. “What you going to name it, little boy? Have you run out of names yet?”

Don Renfro was my dad’s friend that just lived in the next house up the road here on the right. If you’re going back up the river, he was here with my dad.

He said, “Well, you could name him Don.”

And about that time, Doctor Ost piped in, and he said, “Well, you could give him my name too.”

So I’m probably the only person born here who takes the doctor’s name that brought me into the world.
