The railroad, the passing of trains.

Well, let’s go clear back to when I was born. I was a C-section, and Dad was in the service, and he was in Illinois, and he came back, I think he probably got was done with it because then after he came back, he’s home about a month, and then he went over- overseas.

But when he came back, he got to Omaha and missed the train in Omaha. The train, however, already left to be here. Well, he started hitchhiking, ran across the guy that needed a car delivered to Shardon, so he drove the car. He beat the train here by driving the car.

But I remember the passenger train going through it had a mail car on the thing, and mail would come into Rushville twice a day from eastbound train, westbound train, and when and the highway used to go down Main Street and out. We were sitting there one day, and a woman ran up and dropped a letter in the mail car. It had slot there, and I wonder why, how, why did she do that? They said, “Well, there was a guy in there that sorted mail all the way down to Omaha as the train went east, and so if you mailed a letter here, it would be in Gordon when the train got there because they sorted.”

And now it, the mail goes from to Alliance to North Platte, gets sorted there, comes back through Alliance back to Gordon, and then back to Rushville. So if you mailed a letter here, it took maybe a day, if he was lucky, to get it back here.
