I grew up on a farm south of Rushville, and I went to a one-room schoolhouse. We started the morning by having to pump the water for the day—for drinking water and washing. And putting the flag up, I think then we had— you did singing.
One of the things I remember was the year that our teacher had all eight grades and thirteen students. It wasn’t that she had so many students, but she had to teach all of the grades, and that was a real challenge for her. But she did a great job, and I loved it. Let’s see. I guess growing up, going to town Saturday was about the big thing. You just didn’t go to town a lot, but that was when people gathered. And you brought your groceries and traded your eggs and your cream at the grocery store.
Those are just some of the memories I have.
