This story is excerpted from an interview conducted in Rushville in August 2026 with Jerry Wellnitz and PW

PW: I always had a garden. 

Jerry Wellnitz: Her dad had a garden all the time. One time they were. She don’t like green beans. 

Shyanne Bellamy: That is understandable. 

Jerry Wellnitz: And one time they were gone, and they had where we. That’s why we lived in a trailer house between times when she lived in a house there. Anyway, her dad told her, “Well, might check the beans on Sunday. “Well, it turned out they had gobs of beans. I don’t know how many pints of beans. 

PW: Gallons and gallons and gallons.  

Jerry Wellnitz: She canned beans until almost dark. They showed up just as we got done.  

PW: I never canned a bean after that. 

Shyanne Bellamy: Is that why you don’t like green beans? 

PW: No, I didn’t like them before, but I think we did 50 quarts of beans and a whole bunch of pints? So yeah, it was enough. And I had little bitty kids then.
