Growing Up in Rushville

Gathering:

Prompt: What is one of your favorite memories about growing up in Rushville?

Martin Palmer  00:12
Oh gosh, probably just all the neighborhood friends. It was just one big neighborhood, really. Rushville is not that large, and so just just the cliche saying, when the street lights come on, it’s time to go home, and that’s kind of how we were. And and I know people have talked to you about swimming pool, and I was one of the swimming pool rats too that spent a lot of time at the pool.

And so I also did you ever work there, or were you just there?

Martin Palmer  00:45
I did never. I never did work there, no.

Shyanne Bellamy  00:48
And so I heard a lot of stories about Saturday nights. Were you a part of those, or is that?

Martin Palmer  00:53
Oh, certainly. Yeah.

Shyanne Bellamy  00:54
Oh, do you have any stories about that?

Martin Palmer  00:56
Well, probably none that we can share.

Shyanne Bellamy  00:58
Oh, okay. All right, so we’ll we’ll leave that to ourselves. But is there anything else that you remember, like when you were like a teenager or something? Like, what was the most fun thing to do in Rushville?

Martin Palmer  01:10
Oh gosh, well, we just one of the things we did was cruise the streets. You know, we all had a well, not all of us, but I had a car when I was 16, and so that was pretty big to be able to go down, drag down Main Street and down Highway 20 to see all your friends out and and go to the Food Bowl.

Shyanne Bellamy  01:32
Food Bowl. Tell me about that. Did you work there as well, or just?

Martin Palmer  01:37
Well, I did actually work there for a short time, but I was actually a young adult and was a bartender there for a short time in their lounge.

Shyanne Bellamy  01:47
So the Food Bowl-you could do bowling there and-

Martin Palmer  01:49
Mmm-hm, bowling and food-and yeah. So that that was one of our highlights. We also had a little drive-in hamburger stop, you know, like all the little towns had at the time. You could get a hamburger, ice cream cone, or a malt. That was a big hangout for kids too, at the time.

So that was that was, you know, just kind of you have to stop and think. Well, gosh, it’s been a while, but what did we kind of do?

But we played a lot of kick the can and and you know hide and go seek and a lot. I mean, even up into our teens, we probably were doing a lot of that, just messing around with all of our neighborhood friends.
