Feels a little strange

Gathering:

Prompt: What does this place mean to you? Did today spark a memory of someone?

This story was excerpted from an interview in September 2026 with Charlotte and Tonya Huskins.

Charlotte Huskins Feels a little strange because I haven’t been back here, like I said, since I was seven, and it was the time I got my throat cut, which is the story I told her over there. I said they used to service juice in the big old thick juice glasses. I don’t know if they still even make them anymore, and they said, and Mom said I fell right down on it, and it cut my throat right through there.

Tonya Huskins  Her brother shot her in the leg with the bow arrow.

Charlotte Huskins  Yeah, my brother, the one that was born down here, shot me right there. He didn’t mean to do it. I mean, it wasn’t intentional. He was just saying, “Hey, look what I can do! And he shot, and it hit me right there in the back a- and I mean, this was back then wooden. I mean, I had a little wooden arrow with a metal tip on the end of it. So I got literally shot in the cap of the leg right there with a bow and arrow.

Jules Corrier  So who pulled it out?

Charlotte Huskins  They took me to the hospital and cut it out. Nobody was going to pull it out because you know that goes in. You can’t pull it back out the same way it went in.

Jules Corrier  Sounds like you had a few trips to the hospital. Was it this hospital or another hospital?

Charlotte Huskins  It’s probably this one because I wasn’t but about like four years old at that time. So I’d say it’s probably this one down here. I don’t really remember that part. I just, like I said, the one when I was seven. I say it’s kind of hard to remember when you cut, you you lean up and you see blood running down. Kind of triggers your memory.

Jules Corrier  Do you remember the doctor who took care of you?

Charlotte Huskins  Doctor Urquhart had the biggest feet I’d ever seen in my life, and he wore flip-flops. And you could hear him coming a mile away.

Tonya Huskins Is that why you don’t like me wearing flip flops to this day-

Charlotte Huskins That’s why I do not like flip-flops to this day, and I will not wear flip-flops.
