Chrissy Adkins I’m completely a retired firefighter, but before I got sick, I was able to still go on first responder calls. He’s still more into the fire department than I am.
David Adkins I’m still active, actually on the building committee. We’re having to rebuild our fire department after the storm, of course. Yeah, Egypt Ramstown volunteer fire department lost a lot. We lost, lost two buildings. Lost a lot of vehicles. So yeah, we’re in the process of building back. Yeah.
Shyanne Bellamy And when did you both start as firefighters? Were you just like, “I’m going to be a firefighter.” How did that work for you?
David Adkins I took a first responder course where I was working at that time. I was working at Glen River Hills in Burnsville, and our daughter was like two years old. So I thought, you know, with a little one, it’d be good to know what to do if she got choked or whatever. A lot of things can happen. So I took the first responder course, and my supervisor at that time was a member of the fire department. So, he suggested that I come down and talk with them, and so I come down. And on January 19, 1989, I was joined up as a member of Egypt Ramsey Town Volunteer Fire Department, and I’ve been there ever since.
I was the chief for three years. I was assistant chief for at least 10 years. But yeah, slowed down a bit since then.
Shyanne Bellamy And then, what about you?
Chrissy Adkins Well, when we would have dinners and stuff with the fire department, and everybody else was like, “You need to join the fire department,” “You need to join the fire department.” So finally, what about ’93? I guess. I decided, yeah, I wanted to learn CPR, so I went down and during the CPR class, and then ended up joining the fire department.
