They was a house full of us boys

Gathering:

Prompt: What is a birth story that you remember?

And we had all us boys. They was a house full of us boys. It’s nine kids and had one girl, but I lost three brothers when they were little, and they wasn’t none of us born in the hospital except the last three, and we were born at home, and we had a midwife, and she moved in with us, stayed with us when Mama got ready to have the baby, and she’d come and she’d cook food, and my mother stay in the bed, you know, and do- and when it got that way, my dad was like a big bear. He’d set out on the porch if it’s in the summertime. I was born in August, but if it, I can remember other ones down below, behind me. He’d sit out there, and us boys got rowdy out in the yard. We didn’t have no grass, and he was four out. He’s just dirt. We’d get out there and get the scuffling around. He’d say, “All right, boys. He’d sit there on that front porch. He said, “Your mama’s gonna have a baby. Don’t be this hollering stuff.” Oh, it was like Sunday. He wouldn’t. He did. He didn’t want no commotion and all that. he’d say, “you boys get off out yonder the creek somewhere and get away and let your mama rest.” Then when the, when the baby was born, it cried, you know, and he know, well, he get to go in there and see it, you know, and we’d all be out there. Well, when he got it cleaned up, got him cleaned up, he’d say, “You boys, come on, you go see your little brother,” and Mom would have him in the bed, and he just-that’s-that’s the way I was raised. I ain’t ashamed of it.
