I learned about it actually through my daughter

Gathering:

Prompt: When did you learn about the event, and how did you feel in the lead-up to it?

June Lewis Honeycutt I learned about it actually through my daughter who had met Mel and Helen, and they, they asked her if she’d like to participate, which she in turn asked me if I’d like to participate. So she and I have been chasing information, and I got information. A friend, a school friend of mine, had a notebook that her aunt had put together, and her aunt had, had been to school here, and she had put together all newspaper articles concerning the, the Higgins building, and, and gave Judy a notebook full of newspaper articles.

Alli Crandell  Are those some of the ones that we see here today?

June Lewis Honeycutt Yes.

Alli Crandell Wow.

June Lewis Honeycutt  And, and then I contacted Dr. Lloyd Bailey, who is a local historian, but he actually lives in Durham. He taught at Duke, I think, and I contacted him because he had written several books of people from the Toe River, and I knew he would have something, so fortunately he had an interview with someone- this was several years ago- and he, he interviewed someone that actually was alive at the time that Ms. Robinson was here, and he knew, he knew some of the crafts that were made here, he knew some of the people that worked here, and of course Miss Robinson and a lot of the people that, that were in the community, and he knew what they did, and he knew where the rocks came from to build the structures, so it was an amazing amount of information.
