This story is excerpted from a workshop conducted in Yancey County, North Carolina in September 2026 with Millie Lewis.
Talking about RL getting corn. My daddy would gather corn and the sled, and he would take it to the barn, and and we’d have lots of lanterns hanging up at night, and we’d work and work and work shaking the corn cause whoever got the the red ear, the one that had the- the red solid red ear, because it was white corn, but there’d be a red ear in there, and whoever got that would always get to quit first. And if you was an older person, then you got the jug. But us youngins didn’t get no jug. We just got to quit first.
