This story is excerpted from an interview conducted in Rushville in August 2026 with Jerry Wellnitz and PW

Shyanne Bellamy: Do you guys know a little bit of the history about the ballpark?

Jerry Wellnitz: Well, it at one time it had, and I don’t know if it still is. Well, not anymore, but it had more light. What candle power than- 

PW: -than the one in Omaha,

Jerry Wellnitz: Rosenblatt Stadium.  

PW: Yeah, in Omaha. 

Shyanne Bellamy: Candle lit light? 

Jerry Wellnitz: Well, the lights. Lights.  

PW: They had more lights on it than. 

Jerry Wellnitz: And it’s still- 

PW: I mean, you could see it for miles and miles coming into town at night. You always knew if there was a ball game, so. 

Shyanne Bellamy: there was that. 

Jerry Wellnitz: Well, Modisett that donated money to the park in this, and Bill Holstein, it was Chris’s dad, said he was sitting out there at Modisett at one time, and it was getting dark when they was playing. He says, “What would it cost to put lights in here? You suppose, and they put lights in then, and then I don’t suppose it’s too much. But, and then they had a baseball school here. The Milwaukee Braves came in, what about 10 years? I think it was, or so. But people, kids, had come in from all the area to try out or to work with, and people in town open up their homes, take these kids in to stay with them till the school was going on. Then, then when the Milwaukee Braves quit, the New York Yankees came one day, or one year, and then the Los Angeles Angels came one year. One year, and then it fizzled out. They couldn’t get anybody.
