Communal Pen Guidelines

The guidelines apply to every activity of Communal Pen. The most important among these is that everyone is a writer with a story to tell.

These guidelines were adapted from Write Around Portland by Laura Green and Eboni Ramm, and then further edited by The Athenaeum Press team.

  1. Everyone is a writer with an important story to share.
We are here to build community through sharing stories. Some people come in with more or less experience, but all stories are valid. Spelling, punctuation, grammar, and handwriting do not matter, as long as we are sharing from our own experience.
  2. We will share and listen respectfully.
To build community, we will to be open and curious about experiences different from our own. We will refrain from sharing hate speech, language, or viewpoints that are harmful to others.
  3. We are encouraged to share our writing, but sharing is always optional. You can share stories with the world, share them anonymously, or just share them within our workshops and event spaces.
